If you are a fan of martial arts, you know that Chinese kung fu is not only a means of elf-defense, but also quite an artistic ancient tradition. Whether you are a participant or just an appreciative fan, you will find that the history of Chinese kung fu is an interesting one.
All About Chinese Kung Fu
By English speakers, the terms "kung fu" and "martial arts" are often used interchangeably. However, kung fu's original meaning did not place an emphasis on the actual martial arts. Rather, the emphasis was placed on achievement in any area of life, not just martial arts aspects.
Actually, while the tactics behind it are ancient, Chinese kung fu as a term was not popularly in use until the 20th century. It became popular only after the emergence of a television series entitled "Kung Fu," and also because of various martial arts movies.
When it comes to actually figuring out the exact origins of Chinese kung fu, you have to first think about what it means today. When a person says they are studying kung fu, it is not in reference to any particular style of kung fu (of which there are several) it simply means that the person is studying Chinese martial arts.
However, there is no exact meaning for kung fu. The closest meaning would be "achievement through great effort." In fact, this translation can be put into one word: virtue. Whereas now Chinese kung fu is a reference to training in the martial arts, what has come to be known as kung fu was originally the strengthening of the mind and the body.
Chinese kung fu was all about achieving merit in a particular area of life. For example, the Chinese would say that a person had "good kung fu" in calligraphy. This kung fu could only be established through much hard work and persistence to merit such a phrase.
There are three basic principles of Chinese kung fu: time, motivation, and self-discipline. Time is necessary to develop motivation and self-discipline through the use of prioritization. Motivation is the will to do something, and kung fu can never be achieved without this essential aspect.
Self-discipline means overcoming any obstacles that might arise while trying to achieve something. After all, one can want to do something, but one must have the patience to accomplish it. Thus, Chinese kung fu may have ancient origins, but its message is something that can be applied to everyone in today's society who are focused on successful achievements.
