Drunken Kung Fu doesn't sound like it would be very effective. However, most people who practice Drunken Kung Fu aren't really drunk, they are just acting. That's the point. The Drunken style of Kung Fu is really a great defense mechanism. By playing drunk, the practitioner makes his or her opponent believe that they are helpless. However, as any master of Drunken Kung Fu will tell you, this is merely an illusion. Drunken Kung Fu teaches a big lesson in never underestimating your opponent.
Swaying Motions And Slurred Speech
The master of Drunken Kung Fu will make you believe that he or she is intoxicated. The moves of Drunken Kung Fu emulate the moves of a drunk person. The master of Drunken Kung Fu moves in a swaying motion, he or she will stumble, he or she will talk with a slur. It's all to make the opponent drop their guard, even a little bit. By thinking the person is helpless, the opponent puts up less of a defense. When they are suddenly hit and taken out by this supposed drunken person, they never saw it coming.
Drunken Kung Fu has been around for centuries. In fact, a lot of the ancient moves that have been taught throughout the ages have been lost or forgotten. However, there are a few Si Fu's, or instructors, who still teach Drunken Kung Fu. To find a school that offers Drunken style, contact local Kung Fu schools and ask them. If they don't, they may at least be able to point you in the right direction.
Some people think that Drunken Kung Fu gives them an excuse to get drunk. They know that they're drunk but they can still defend themselves. This isn't true. The Drunken master isn't really drunk, it's all an act. It's sort of the same as an opossum playing dead, it's a defense mechanism. Now, imagine if the opossum suddenly hit you with a lightning fast strike that you never even saw coming and you can imagine the power of the Drunken master.
Search around for this ancient art to see if anyone offers lessons. Then, the next time you find yourself needing to defend yourself, you can start to sway and act drunk. Hopefully, your opponent will drop their guard, thinking you're helpless. They don't know that you're merely a practitioner of Drunken Kung Fu.
